William Francis Vandeveer Kughler (1901-1970) was born in New York City and lived in Kingsbridge in the Bronx. He studied at the National Academy of Design, the Mechanics’ Institute, and the Cooper Union. He was also a member of the National Arts Club and became President of the Salmagundi Club from 1963-1965. He exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Chappelier Gallery in New York (Solo 1954), the National Arts Club, and the Salmagundi Club. Kughler received numerous rewards, including the Tiffany Fellowship in 1925, which allowed him to spend time at the Louis Comfort Tiffany Estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island, where he painted landscapes. Kughler’s paintings are in the permanent collections of museums and institutions including: the Salmagundi Museum of American Art, the National Academy of Design, the War Correspondents Memorial of the Associated Press, the Museum of Art in Oslo, Norway, the Doctors Memorial School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, New York.
